The Extended Essay (EE)

A core part of the IB Diploma Programme, alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). It gives students the chance to explore a topic they care about and develop valuable research and writing skills.

  An independent research project on a question chosen by the student.

  The topic comes from one of the student’s IB subjects.

  Students write a formal academic essay of up to 4,000 words.
• •
  Each student is supported by a teacher-supervisor and an Extended Essay Coordinator.

  Research and writing take place over several months.
• •
  Students are responsible for planning and managing their time.
• •
  Develops skills in research, critical thinking, and academic writing.
• •
  Provides experience managing a long-term project.
• •
  Prepares students for the kind of work expected at university.
• •
  Increases confidence, independence, and perseverance.
